Why HARO and Story Marketplaces Matter

Why HARO and Story Marketplaces Matter

Cision is shutting down HARO (Connectively) on December 9.

What's the big deal?

If you didn't know, HARO is used by PR and Journalists to work together - sort of a marketplace for stories.

HARO was founded by Peter Shankman in 2008 as a Facebook group for journalists in need of sources.

But AI has changed the way PR and Journalists pitch and scout for stories.

For example, with AI, I can contact several hundred journalists at once with a customized message within a few minutes that before would've taken hours.

Likewise Journalists can now use AI platforms like Perplexity and AI agents to scan news for stories that appeal to them.

Two things will live on after HARO goes away that PR pros can still rely upon:

  1. The idea of “helping reporters” to earn coverage remains more important than ever
  2. When a big company kills a popular product, a startup usually fills the void and makes it even better

What do you think? Did you ever use HARO?
